Thank goodness we got direct star Tv just in time for the start of my favorite television of all time, “True Blood”. I am usually not someone who enjoys science fiction and vampire themed movies and shows. I haven’t seen or read the “Twilight” series or seen the “Harry Potter” movies. I started watching “True Blood” earlier this year when we went to my in-laws house for a long visit. The first season of the series was available on their cable network. By the time we left a week later, my husband and I had watch all of the episodes from season one to season three. “True Blood” incorporates drama, comedy, and vampire action and acts like a drug that leaves you wanting more. The characters are colorful and the plots are intriguing. I also love that it is set in a small bayou town in the heart of Louisiana. The setting has an authentic feel. Not to mention the male cast is composed of very attractive males who are often not wearing their shirts! I can’t wait until the next season starts!

When my husband asked me to look into electric rates in my area ambit energy was the first company I checked with. I had used them in the past and was really happy but low and behold he had a better idea – what he really meant for me to do was sign on with his buddy ted’s company. Now I usually wouldn’t have a problem with that but Ted is known all over town for having unscrupulous business practices and I just didn’t want any part of that. When I told my husband no it literaly turned into the biggest fight we’ve ever had – I couldn’t believe it! At the end of the fight I was accusing him of choosing his friends over me and he was telling me I was all about money…things that weren’t at all what we started arguing about. It began small but some issues came up that apparently we need to address which is why I’ve signed us up for marital counseling. We start Monday and I’m only a little nervous…

Then, enter your video for the contest. Once the video is entered, you need to invite friends and family and coworkers to VOTE for your video. That’s it.

To Rent or Not to Rent

Last night, my Sweetie was busy browsing on Calgary Apartments online. I wondered why and suspected that she might be cooking up something again this time. Well, apparently, she has a friend who is now based in Calgary, Alberta and she is planning to spend her entire summer vacation there. Well, I am not really worried for now since it's way too far ahead. I was thinking it might really be a nice idea to go for a vacation for a change. I just need to google if Alberta has some gold for panning. wink***

But then, renting an apartment for our vacation is a great idea since it will be more convenient for us aside from the fact that the rate is practical and affordable too. We really don't know how long we would be there since she was only browsing for now but knowing my Sweetie, I don't think she only wanted to go for a visit for a week so renting an apartment is the best thing to do. Well, most visitors to RentCalgary.com are people looking to rent a home in Calgary, Alberta. And my Sweetie would surely love to spend her vacation on a homey environment.

Oh well, time flies quickly and as soon as the New Year starts months will be passing by quickly too. So, I better be prepared for anything because my Sweetie can change her mind anytime soon too.

Baking is not one of my strong points. My husband says that is putting it lightly. I guess there was a recent teeny tiny incident that might have put my skills further under question than usual. I recently got a new stand mixer, and decided to whip up a batch of cupcakes for a party we were attending. Seems fairly easy, right? It actually went really well. My batter was perfect, they cooked perfectly, I cooled and iced them and we headed to our friend’s house. One little problem—seems that somewhere along the way I forgot to turn the oven off. In my defense, it is a lot of steps to make the perfect cupcake. Luckily, we were barely down the street before I realized I’d forgotten something and we turned around to grab it. Immediately when I stepped in the house, I smelled the gas and shut the oven off. I’m so thankful that I did, as I have a dog and a cat who probably don’t want to breathe in noxious gas fumes. The good news, though, is that we also have an ADT long beach alarm, so once the sensor detected the carbon monoxide, an alarm would have sounded and the proper authorities would have been called. In the end it probably wouldn’t have been a disaster, but I will be staying away from baking for a while. Just in case.

When I opened up my garage I didn’t have any business experience and I wasn’t sure how good I was going to be at it. I’ve been learning slowly and making mistakes every day but there’s no way anyone could know about some of the hardships I was going to deal with without actually going through it themselves. For example, I had a hard time finding some way to accept credit cards and my customers just weren’t able to pay me cash for the things I was doing to their cars. A friend finally told me about BANK-CARD-PROCESSING.com which has really helped but things like that are the things you learn when you’re on your own and trying to run a business. There are tons more lessons for me to learn but it won’t take long at this rate – each day brings some kind of new challenge but so far I feel like I’ve really been holding my own when it comes to being a small business owner with a good head on his shoulders.

It was indeed a huge step for her to finally agree to sleep in the tent.

Last Weekend

Last weekend my boy finally agreed to go camping with us. I was indeed thrilled because last year he had a huge fit and I wasn't able to make him change his mind no matter how hard I tried.

Last weekend we spent quality time at the camp. We went fishing. We went gold panning. We watched movie inside the tent. It was simply awesome.

Last weekend I was able to do what I love doing during this time of the year - gold panning. And my sweetie and my boy did a great job in making that weekend awesome, despite the fact that I didn't get a huge nugget.

It's Gold Panning Season Again

It's summertime again and I am hoping that I will be able to do gold panning with my Sweetie and my son this year. You see, they bailed out on me last year.

Sweetie took a weekend job. I was guessing she took that job to have an excuse not to go with me.

But this year, I was able to convince her to go with me without any argument. She was awesome. Now, I need to convince my son to go with us. And that will take some bribing. lol

What in the world was I thinking moving to Seattle? When I came here a few years ago it was to live with my boyfriend of two years. Well, about three months after moving in he got kind of crazy so I decided to move out and that was the best decision I ever made. He sort of followed me for a bit and I even got a SECURITYCHOICE.COM alarm since I wasn’t sure if he might come to my house or something, but now I’m not worried at all and I hear he even has a new girlfriend. One of the things we are concern about when we do renovations is to make sure that other parts of the house which are not part of the project remain intact. It could be a real challenge especially with all the debris produced during the course of the project. Of course we take all measures to keep organized and to protect those parts as much as we could. But we cannot control other mess that goes with the process.

Okay, I know this supposed to be about my carpentry job but since lately that my projects are minor jobs, I thank God though that I have time to do things that are productive.

Scrubs Save my Day

My daughter works as a caregiver for over 5 years now. I am so proud of her. She’s a dedicated and hard worker. I just love to see her wearing her medical scrubs every time she comes for a visit. She looks so dignified and professional.

Last January , I was too busy working and didn’t have time to go shopping for her birthday presents. Well, of course I really don’t do shopping. It’s my Sweetie’s department. But she sometimes asks me what I want to give my children so I would come up with suggestions. But still, it’s up to her if she will get it or not. In other words, she got the last word.

Season Change Cleaning

I don't know about other people but with my Sweetie, cleaning is a must every season change. She has spring cleaning, summer cleaning, fall cleaning and of course, winter cleaning schedules. So before each season ends she needs to clean the house from top to bottom. She is a little OCD in that case. So winter season is about to end and I am expecting that we will be needing to clean the carpet and upholstery again just like last season change. Tough Times

Tough times seem getting tougher. To think that I am hoping that the economy will soon bounce back, home foreclosures are still on the rise. So construction jobs are still scarce here. That is one reason why no matter how much I want to post anything about my work or job-related issues, I am having a hard time. After a couple of projects before Christmas and after the New Year, I am here again waiting for another project. I am trying my hands again on new bidding here and there but to no avail.

And when the economy is shaky, everything is unstable. Everybody feels the pinch and Wifey is not exempted from it. She is already complaining about everything too from bills to food and gas prices, from services to glasses frames. But what can we do? Everything is beyond anybody's control... not even Obama. VD Pressures

VD is just around the corner. Time flies so quickly. I haven't even recovered yet. I haven't even recovered from the expenses from last December [I went to Jared!] and here come Valentine's Day.

Well, expenses are something that will surely stick around no matter what. Last December, I got some huge spending. I had to buy 4 new tires for my truck... replaced its windshield... and bought a couple of parts needed for repair. Then, comes Christmas season where I need to buy presents for my Sweetie. Whew.

Now, it's Valentine's Day... then March... which will be my Sweetie's birthday. Hayyyy!

Down the Frozen Lakes

I know my Sweetie isn't very impressed when I spend long hours in the lakes and ponds of Maine. Though she knows that it is that time of the year where we enjoy some winter activities like snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and of course her most favorite... ice-fishing.

She is happy that it is ice-fishing season already. What she is not happy about it.. is that I spend so much time out in the frozen lake while I am having some pains on my back, toes and joint. She is complaining that when I am hurting and in pain, she takes the toll because I bother her to rub my back with her magic ointment.

Well, what can I do? I can't work full time now considering the weather. We have snow storms almost twice a week so we can't work on a regular basis for obvious reasons. And for obvious reasons... it is the best time when fishes bite!

Alone on New Year's Day

This is the very first New Year's Day that we didn't celebrate together since we got married. When she told me her plans last year, I was okay with it. It only sank deep when she finally got the ticket 6 months after. And I finally realized it's impact when she finally said goodbye to me at the airport.

Last week, we had a really bad snow storm that led to cancellations of thousand of flights. I was secretly hoping that it will continue so I can keep Sweetie to myself and celebrate New Year with her. But I knew deep in my heart that this vacation meant so much to her specially that she will finally reunited with her cousin whom she had not seen for more than 10 years.

Well, my Sweetie calls me everyday since she left to check on me and to share how her day was. And every time we speak on the phone... I knew how happy she is and how she misses me so much. And that is good enough reason that I let her go - at least for just a couple of weeks.

Cleaning Time

It’s not officially Winter yet but it feels like it. The crazy weather, the allergies, the sickness and the whole 9-yards that go with the changing season is all around me. And I have very little time in my hand now do play around so I need to really get ready with my fall cleaning before winter sacked me up.

So this weekend I planned to try the “air duct cleaning do it yourself” because I need to make sure that the air ducts are clear of debris so air can circulate properly for ventilation. I's been a while since I last wrote here. Aside from a few "guest posts" every not too often, my blogging really took a back seat because My Sweetie is now working on weekends too. Well, if she is not home on weekends I rather not be home too and blogging [I took a weekend job too and I hang out with some friends when I was not working]. And besides I really spent the whole summer gold panning which reminds me that I should have posted a lot of interesting blogs if I wasn't too lazy to do so. Well, what else is new? Okay, so gold panning is over folks because the river is too cold to dredge now. I will not brave it for hypothermia's sake because I have big plans for next summer.

Putting together my own home gym

One thing that I really miss about college, besides all the fun that I had, was that the student rec center on campus was open 24 hours a day. That really helped me out because a lot of times my busy schedule with business school classes and studying meant that I would only have time to work out late at night or really early in the morning before my classes. Now it's tough to find regular gyms that have hours like that, which has kept me from exercisign a lot lately. So I'm workiing on putting together my own gym at home.

I looked up some stuff about home gyms with my DIRECT TV internet and got a lot of information about what kind of equipment people typically put in them. But then I was thinking that maybe I could hire someone to design one for me.

Either way, I sat down and thought about the equipment that I would want and need for my home gym. I knew that I definitely want a set of hand weights and a tread mill because those are the things that I always use when I go to the gym.

Awesome Scrubs

According to Wifey, one of the reasons why she found the medical or health profession fascinating is the scrubs. I don’t really get it, to be honest with you. But I have to admit that my wife has valid reason for saying that. And to debate about this topic is like picking a fight. LOL

Anyway, my eldest daughter works as a care giver in one of the Home Care centers and wifey got her some scrub uniform for Christmas present and she was ecstatic. She said that is so far the best and most fashionable women scrubs. I still don’t understand. It’s just a uniform. Does it have to be fashionable? Oh well, again, I don’t want to pick a fight with both my wife and my daughter. So I just let them be happy and talk about scrubs.

Given the situation and that account, I also got her a couple of scrub uniforms on her birthday and all of a sudden I was the best Dad in the world. Ah women… you cannot really understand them. But so far, I really suspect that the reason is because those scrubs are the best scrubs there is in the market.

Miss my Sweetie

I was busy working on a new project for couple of weeks now and it's almost done. I have only a few more hours to finish up on the wall and will move on to the next project, hopefully.

Weekends is here and just like any other weekends of summer, I will be spending it again up Byron at the Swift River, gold panning hoping to find my nuggets.

Last weekend, I brought my boy with me. We did have a good time except on some occasions where he got bored and gave me a hard time.

My Sweetie has no time to go gold panning with me anymore since she also works on weekends now. Oh how I miss her in the camp. Now I need to set up the tent, cook meals, sort the rocks out, and all other stuff - all by myself. It was indeed great to have an extra pair of hands. And I was so sorry for giving her a hard time each time we went gold panning because I was being such a jerk sometimes.

Now I will go up Byron alone again.

Every Wednesday night I go and play BINGO with some of my friends. It’s kind of a tradition and we always sit in the same spot out of habit. Where I sit, I always have my back turned to the caller. This wasn’t much of a problem for a long time because I could hear him just fine.

But in the past couple of months it’s been getting harder and harder for me to hear the caller so I have to stay turned a little bit in my seat or turn around after each number is called so that I can see which one is lit up on the board.

This was getting annoying to me and my friends mentioned that it was starting to wreck their concentration. So I knew I better do something about it or I’d hear about if from them every week.

I found some miracle hearing aids reviews that seemed pretty good and some miracle ear hearing aid prices that I thought were in my budget. I think I’m going to go and get some later this week so I can keep outperforming my friends.

Finding Tickets For Streetlight Manifesto

Streetlight Manifesto is a ska band from New Jersey that was formed in 2003, after lead singer and songwriter Tomas Kalnoky left his previous band Catch 22. They released their debut cd Everything Goes Numb on August 26, 2003. The 12 track cd was the first full length offering from the band after their four track demo was released only a year earlier. The album deals with subjects relating to suicide, literature and existentialism, and social out casts. Much of the cd makes reference to Keasby NIghts, a cd that was released by Thomas before he departed Catch 22.

In November of 2007 Streetlight released their second cd titled Somewhere in the Between. Two of the tracks, We Will Fall Together and Would You Be Impressed, were notable as they were the first two music videos produced by Streetlight. As an added bonus to fans, the band made the cd available at their hometown show. Including a poster with every cd sold, it was made available only at the show four days before it's official release date.

When Streetlight released their latest tour schedule with a plan to stop in Baltimore, I knew that I had to get tickets. Music venues in Baltimore have joined together to create a website that makes it easier for people to purchase tickets to their favorite shows in the area. I ordered my tickets using my 4g internet and TV deal and was able to print them from the comfort of my own house.

Special Touch to the House

We use P.O. Box for our mailing address. I feel that is better than the mailbox since the box is too small for some of the deliveries that I need. But my Sweetie has a special fond for mailboxes. She loves taking pictures of mailboxes.

I, on the other hand, am very fond of address plaques. I think they are a special feature of the house. It gives a certain character about the house. And it gives a unique marking for the house. And since our address plaque is personalized, I think it gives our home a special character uniquely ours.

Well, address signs and house address plaques are just ordinary things that are not my concern in house building but as a home owner myself... yes, it is optional. But it added special touch to the house. And I quote my Sweetie for that last statement.

How We Celebrate our 3rd Year Anniversary

I have been busy lately. Awwws... that's an understatement.

Or maybe not. I have been busy looking for work lately. Ohhh... that sounds better and more truthful.

Yup... been busy lately that is why all my post here are Guest Posts which I really appreciate.

Well, I have been busy lately with gold panning too. And that is the most exciting part. Though Wifey thinks that I am planning to do gold panning full time. But that is not so true. Gold panning is just my hobby. Ok... I need to correct that before Wifey reacts. Gold panning is one of my ~~many~~ hobbies.

Oh well, don't get me going. I am writing today not because of gold panning. I will have a separate post on that. Meantime, I am writing because me and Wifey just celebrated our 3rd year Wedding Anniversary.

Yup, she is stuck with me for 3 years now. LOL.

Three years and it felt like forever. Thank God that we made it to the 3rd year. Our relationship is just like any other's. It isn't perfect. There were rough spots. There were tough roads. There were difficult turns. But still we made it. We got there. And now we are moving on to the next. Hope we will continue to go through thick and thin.

Wifey got me gifts... a shirt because she believes that I need to have a descent shirt to wear when we go out on a date ~~which is very seldom now~~. And a belt because she is kinda disturbed every time I pull my pants up. Isn't she sweet. I didn't get her anything on our anniversary. My Bad! And in fact I even gave her a hard time and engaged her in some argument. She was so pissed at me. I feel guilty now. I just don't know why I always lose control of my temper. But I still love her so. I just hope that she will always forgive me... or else I will never forgive myself.

How to Fill in The Gap Until Football Season Arrives

One of the hardest things to do is figure out what sports there are to watch on satellite tvduring the summer, while waiting on football to start again. Personally, my most favorite sport by far is football. The problem is that it only last from roughly September to the end of January, which leaves a large gap of time having to figure out something to watch until the beginning of the next season.

After doing some soul searching I decided that watching NASCAR was the most likely choice. In a way, NASCARis kind of like football. The big race happens only once during the week, unlike basketball or baseball where you have games all during the week.

There is a good amount of buildup, and drama between race teams, and drivers on how to approach each week from track to track. Some of the top drivers like Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are great competitors, and keep the action interesting from week to week.

It works out great because the NASCAR schedule basically begins at the end of the football schedule and runs through the middle of the next season’s football schedule. I’ve found that this was the best way find some sports to watch on TV during the summer, and a way to keep interested in something worthwhile until my favorite sport starts again in the Fall.

I would highly suggest it, grab a weekly NASCAR schedule, and start enjoying some top notch competitors go at it.

Watching the World Cup is going to be amazing

Watching the World Cup on my new satellite tv local channels is going to be amazing. I am going to have a big party with all of my friends and we are going to watch every game that we can. The World Cup is unlike any other tournament in the world. The fans are so passionate. And when a goal is scored, I love to watch the celebration of the players and the fans.

I think the United States could be a problem for the other teams in the tournament this year. Our defense isn’t as strong as I’d like it to be, so our goalkeeper is going to have to play amazingly well for us to win. I think he will.

Our offense should be pretty good. I think we will have a lot of scoring chances with the likes of Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidor roaming the field. I have high hopes for this United States team. Can you just imagine what the rest of the world would think if we would make it to a World Cup Final?

I think the key to the United States success will be our defense and our ability to score when given a chance. We have to take advantage of every opportunity we get because they can come few and far between in the World Cup.

The summer season is full of exciting activities and one can almost feel their hat flowing over the brim with things to do once the calendar page has turned and you are at that first day of summer. One of the best aspects about summer is that the outdoors is so gorgeous and there are so many activities going on like beach trips, going to the park, outdoor concerts and outdoor sports games to enjoy. One of my favorite holidays is coming up which is Father's day. If you knew my dad you'd understand why, he is the go to man for everything. He doesn't just fix everything I need him to but he tries to teach me what he's doing as he does it. I personally don't like shopping in stores close to any holiday because of how over crowded they get and standing in long lines is not how I'd like to spend my Saturday afternoon. Yes, I did not win over my Sweetie about taking a long trip to California to see her dear cousin. We did take a road trip to California and I had to admit we did have a blast. We need to stop in every key city that we passed by of course, so that she can take photos… hundred of them… for her blogs. I can’t complain since I am a willing victim anyway. LOL.

The road trip took longer that I expected. But I am not complaining, we had a wonderful time bonding with each other. And by the way, we took my Ford F-150 truck instead of her car so I don’t have to worry about breaking down on the road in the middle of nowhere and have problem looking for an auto shop.

We did stop once to check engine light but other than that we did fine. And as my Sweetie said… "don’t worry… because San Diego auto repair is just a call away". Oh well, I cannot argue with that too. Knowing that it is one of the most reliable auto shops in San Diego area, I know that I can have a peace of mind.

Here is the thing. Wifey is crazy of going to LA to see her cousin whom she has not seen for over 10 years. I understand. I agree that she needs to get in touch and reconnect with family. And I am very supportive of her.

But what I am not in agreement about the whole idea of going to California is that she wants us to drive to go there. You see, our Ford Explorer is not that reliable for long trips especially if we are talking about coast to coast driving across the US continent. Of course we are not really driving straight to California. Knowing my Sweetie we will surely taking side trips here and there… spend over night in some interesting cities to take photos and of course, go shopping.

But I am not really too crazy about driving our Ford Explorer for long trips because of some issues with its head gasket. But my Sweetie said that it’s alright because there is such thing as Los Angeles auto repair shop.

So what do you think? Do you think I will win in this argument? Do you think I have a chance with her logic and convincing power? Do you think she is insane? Do you think I have a choice?

The real Road Test

School will be soon over and it means vacation time. For most of us, Carpenters, it is actually work season. This is the time where construction job is in full swing to take advantage of the warm and nice weather. Ask any carpenter and he will tell you… weather is a big factor in any building construction for obvious reasons.

And speaking of nice warmer weather, this is also a nice time for road trips. Yeah, a lot of Americans spend lots of time, precious dollars, and gas to go places and enjoy the weather. So if you are planning to go on a road trip, be sure that you are prepared for the unexpected. If you are taking your old Toyota Camry be sure to check engine light so that your planned vacation will not end up in an auto repair shop.

To Camp or Not to Camp

It’s camping season again. The ground and the water in the rivers and lakes are still a little bit cold but in few weeks time, I know it will warm up… both the ground and water.

If Wifey is all crazy about spring because she loves taking photos of all sorts of flowers, I on the other hand am all crazy about summer. I can’t wait for summer to come. I can’t wait for summer because it is the best time to do all the things I love to do like… camping, fishing and gold panning. Last summer, we spent almost all weekends up north doing just that. It was fun despite all the whining and complaining and ranting. Well, Wifey used to enjoy “hotel camping” a couple of years ago because she loves the convenience of the bathroom which you cannot find in serious campsites.

Last year, I was able to convince her to try the campsites and yeah, there was a little struggle here and there but somehow she still not too crazy about the whole thing. She did go anyway. This year, I am looking at some motorhomes at a local trade fair to find out if there is one that we can afford so I will not have a hard time convincing my Sweetie to go camping with me again.

Finally, I get the chance to work again on our house renovation. My Sweetie is very impressed so far.

I have been doing our house's side for quite awhile. Well, I have been working on it... on and off... for awhile for varied reasons.

For My Eyes Only

I need a new pair of eyeglasses. That’s what I told my Sweetie this morning.

I don’t know about other people, but I tend to lose or misplace my eyeglasses every now and then. And I hate looking for it. That is why I need to have at least a couple of pairs in two strategic places where I usually need them… the bedroom and my truck. Well, what do you expect from a 52 year old guy? I even didn’t realize they were on top of my head the other day when I was going crazy looking for it. I was so mad at myself.

Although I can read without my eyeglasses on, compared to my Sweetie, I do need one specially when I am working to make sure that I am reading the right measurement on my measuring tools so that I will not make a mistake in cutting or marking the building materials.

And speaking of eyeglasses, the only thing that I don’t like about it is the price. I don’t know why it cost so much. But then I’m glad that my Sweetie is very resourceful that she was able to find a real good deal online. Thanks, again Sweetie.

My recent project now involves roofing. I am not complaining but for doing the job for more than 15 years now my back is my drawback... literally. Well, I am getting old. Ok So I have not written any post for the last few days here. I am a little busy with every little things here and there.

Well, "busy" is the most abused word in the dictionary according to my Sweetie. Oh well, she also called it my alibi... and I couldn't complain less. She must be right because I'm always busy with friends. Well, I just don't go with my friends just to hang out. I hang out because I usually find jobs by hanging out with friends. If you know what I mean. And of course, Sweetie thought it's another alibi. Hayyyy [sigh]!

My "busy days" however is over for awhile because I did find job. Yes, Sweetie knew about it and of course she wouldn't admit that I was right, somehow. So I am doing some projects now and I am just glad that I do. Hope it will take a long while this time.

It's Maine Maple Sunday

It's Maine Maple Sunday today. Celebrated every 4th Sunday of March, Maple Sunday is the sweetest day in Maine's calendar of events, quite literally and figuratively. Why not, we produce the best maple syrup in the planet [though a lot of places claim that title too]. Anyway, I'm not really too crazy about maple syrup except that I cannot eat my pancakes, waffles and french toast without it. Well, not really too crazy huh. But for my Sweetie... she can cook dishes with a dash of maple syrup... like her recycled left-over ham on pineapple and maple syrup. OMG... it is something to-die-for [not quite literally though]. LOL.

And just so you know... while waiting for the economy to take a different route up... I made myself productive by tapping some of our maple trees outback. And since I am not really into Maple Syrup production... I don't have any of those standard equipments used for tapping sap. I used recycled juice and milk bottles or gallons to collect the sap from the tree. And that I think... makes my sap organic. wink*

And since I really don't know how to make maple syrup I have a friend who produce maple syrup for business... so I brought all the sap I collected to him for cooking.

He has a big syrup boiler where he cooks the sap. And it takes 50 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of maple syrup. That is why he doesn't use recycled bottles to collect sap... but meters upon meters of plastic pipes attached to the tree and to a motor to suck the sap up faster that goes straight to the boiler.

In this present economic situation where unemployment is not just a threat to one’s financial stability but emotional and psychological state of mind and where underemployment is not just an option but the only choice to survive… education or skill are two important factors that will determine if one has the strength or the weakness in the job market.

The economic situation is not getting any better in two weeks time. That we all know. And as an optimist, I got to do what I got to do. I need to keep myself updated and on the loop on how I can keep up with my financial standing if I want to keep my sanity intact.

Construction: An Exhausting and a Rewarding Job

As a builder having your own business or operating your own construction company is both exhausting and rewarding. It’s exhausting because you have to deal with all the problems that any builder have to deal with. I love/hate Special Occasions

Wifey loves weddings. My Mom loves weddings. My Nana loved weddings. And my two grown-up daughters dream of having their own magical weddings someday. What's up with women and weddings?

I hate weddings. No, don't get me wrong. It's just that I'm a very shy guy. I hate the crowd and I hate dressing up. If only I could attend wedding on my working boots and overalls. Weddings are fine and I would certainly look forward to it only because I do love the free food and the free drinks. LOL

I hate weddings. No, offense meant. I just feel that weddings are very touchy. Weddings are supposed to be happy occasions but I can't help it to be touchy when I see the groom shed tears... the father-of-the-bride sobs... the father-of-the-groom cries... or even when the Best Man becomes teary-eyed because when they happen, I can easily get carried away and I would start crying too. And Wifey will surely make fun of me when we get home.

But if there is anything I like about weddings aside from the free food and drinks... it's the wedding invitations. Surprise? Well, I may not be an artistic or creative person but I know how to appreciate arts. Wifey loves to collect wedding invitations and I love looking at them. I think they are nice remembrance of thsoe special occasions. And I even like those save the date cards that usually go with the invitations. They are cute and adorable. Now, what am I talking about? hahahaha I am a guy and I should not be talking about these girly thingies.

But seriously, I do hate weddings because I hate being emotional, it robs me off my manly appeal. But on the contrary, I do love weddings too because of the things that go with it. Those things that make any wedding memorable and worth remembering.

My Sweetie Drives me Nuts

So here is the thing. I got Wifey a new pair of earrings to match the necklace that I got for her on Christmas. She was freakin' out. LOL

Well, I was really a pain-in-her-you-know-what since we got married and for the first couple of years that we have been together, I never heard her say anything every time we would have an argument or whenever I would hurt her feelings. She would just sit quietly and cry. It does melt my heart every time she would do that. And whatever she was thinking for doing that... it worked... it made me feel guilty once I saw those tears running down her checks. I would just swear to you-know-who that I wish she would speak her mind because I cannot take her silent treatment. It was a torture. It was very effective.

Well, after a couple of years... she learned to speak her mind. So much for wishing it. They are right... be careful with what you wish for... you might get it. And I did. Now she won't shut up. And for some reasons... the impact is still the same... whether she opens her mouth or not.

But, one thing for sure... my Sweetie isn't perfect... and so do I. And she drives me crazy whatever she does.

Wifey's Birthday Disaster

It's Wifey's birthday on Sunday. I'm feeling the pressure. LOL

Well, it's not that she is demanding. I just felt that I got to do something on this special day because of 3 important reasons.

1. I had a hard time remembering her birth date when we were new in the relationship. And it kinda stuck on her mind. When she celebrated her birthday for the very first time as my wife... I got confused with the date and it hurt her so bad and every time her special day is fast approaching or anybody's birthday for that matter, she will remind me that I don't know her birth date.

2. On the second year that she celebrated her birthday as my Wife... I kinda screwed up again. Though I did remember her birthday on the exact date... I gave her a hard time by insisting on doing what I wanted to do on her birthday instead of giving her a choice to do what she wanted. It was indeed a disaster. I've learned my lesson well.

3. And even if I screwed up on those two consecutive years... and made her felt so bad on her special day... she never failed to make my own birthday so special with all the surprises and gifts that she planned and showered me. And I felt even worse and guilty for what I have done on her birthday.

This year it will be her 3rd birthday as my Wife... and I don't want to ruin it for her again. This time I will surely make it a point to make an extra ordinary thing that will make her happy. And I hope that I will not screw up the third time.

So help me God!

Going the Extra Mile

Some builders do other jobs other than building or carpentry not just to satisfy their clients but to show their dedication to their job. As builder our work is not done when the building or house is finished. We owe it to our home-owners or clients to do our work beyond the call of duty because we are proud of our service.

When Wifey and I spent a brief vacation in Texas with her cousin, I was not very happy. Well, it was actually a fun vacation for most part of it except that my tooth was bothering me that time. Yes, of all time to bother me… on a much awaited vacation.

Anyway, Wifey was not happy too because when there is anything bothering me… I bother her. My Poor Wifey and Her Chinese

My Sweetie is not very happy today. She had her medical check up with her Gastroenterologist last Monday and she was advised to come back tomorrow... Friday for the Colonoscopy procedure. That isn't fun.

My poor Sweetie is not really very happy today. She is on detox diet and cannot take anything solid but jello. And of all flavors... only lime and lemon. She cannot take anything color red, blue or purple. But she did have some Chinese for supper last night. She and her Chinese! Can't argue with that.

My Sweetie pie is not so happy but I am happy that she will finally take that procedure so she will feel fine soon and for my peace of mind.

Between Ice-Fishing and Glasses

My Sweetie can’t believe that I have not gone fishing as often as I used to. Blame it to work. Blame it to weather. Blame it to timing. Blame it to anything you want but "me". Because as for me, I really wanted to go fishing as often as I want to but I just couldn’t.

The weather has gone crazy this winter. The higher than normal winter temperature this year helped the lakes and ponds warmed up and thawed the ice. Thank you very much.

My Sweetie can’t believe that we didn’t join the Sabago Lake Ice-Fishing Derby this year. This is the only year that we didn’t join it since she came here in Maine. She so loves it. It is the only outdoor activity that I don’t hear her whines… a lot. Wink*

It would have been nicer if I had a project going on so I would have a valid alibi for not using my fishing license which cost more than what my Sweetie paid for her Zenni Optical glasses that she bought online. It would have been nicer if I was too busy working on even just a little room renovation at least I know that I have something to look forward to... to pay my bills. And it would have been nicer if I do have a project and be able to go ice-fishing on weekends like I used to.

Work Experience... Do you have it?

Work Experience: It is what home owners are looking for when they are going to hire someone to build their homes. It's either you have it or you don't. Homeowners hire builders based on work experience.

Our trade is not just like any trade that you can learn by reading manuals. It is not like an art project that you can make by creating splashes of colors and come-what-may or like making wedding invitations that you only need to come up with color motif, design, theme, and special paper and you are good to go. It is not like playing monopoly that you need luck hoping that when you role the dice you will end up in “parking” and get awarded with the sum of money in the collection spot.

It is all about the length of years you have acquired to build that experience. It's all about the kind of experience you gained in that length of years. And it's all about the years of experience that you put in perfecting your trade.

Work experience is not just about work qualification... it is about us... as builders. It is the very basic foundation of any building that we build. And we take pride in that because with my years of experience... I am confident that I can deliver my homeowners' expectations.

Unplanned Vacation

Our last project is done and I am now waiting for a new one. Boy, it is really tough.

And since I had nothing to do... I accompany a friend at his family's camp up north at Elm Pond. I was just happy that my Sweetie let me took that unplanned vacation up north without any struggle and guilty feeling. She even packed my stuff. Love you Sweetie!

So we went about hundreds of miles up north which was about 5 hours drive from our place passing Mouse Head Lake. It was a nice place away from civilization.

There is a nearby lodge for sale sitting in a 500-acre woodland filled with maple trees. The place is an old maple syrup farm with old lodge and cabins and a nice snowmobile trail. If only I have the money... this is indeed a good alternative source of income for me since maple syrup is one of the main products of Maine. It would be a better alternative source of livelihood especially when construction business is down.

I wish I had the money to buy the property.

My Bad!

This is a post-Valentine post.

My Bad! I didn't get anything for my Sweetie. But that is beside the point. The point is... I didn't see it coming.

I was actually hoping that she will get mad. That she will give me hell [just like in the past]. And that she will give me cold treatment for God-only-knows-how-long. And I was actually all set with that because I deserve it.

But lo and behold. She didn't.

She even had a wonderful card for me and a gift card from LL Bean. She wanted me to buy a pair of sneakers and begging me to go shopping for them. I of course, refuse. I can't handle it.

She didn't even whine about me not buying her flowers or chocolate. Maybe because she knows that I bought her a gold heart locket necklace last Valentine's Day which I just finished paying and a multi-colored diamond necklace last Christmas? I don't know. What I know now is that... she is different. And I like it.

I love my sweetie.

DIY in the CES

With the current economic situation... [Oh yeah, You must have already noticed by now that I usually have the phrase... "with the current or present economic situation or crisis" in most of my posts here. Sorry, can't help it.] people are looking for more ways to save without sacrificing their lifestyle. The economic situation dictates the people lifestyle and if the economy is down, lifestyle spiral down as well.

But with the [again] current economic situation (CES) there are things that we need to address no matter what or problems that need immediate solution irregardless if we have the resources or not. And in that case we need to come up with bright new ideas or alternative and effective solutions to address such needs.

In the field of construction, I have known for a long while now how hard it is to get new projects because more and more houses are being foreclosed and in that case, less and less new houses are being built. For a builder like me, in this CES we could have other alternative source of income through house renovations or additions. But honestly speaking, even that is getting very limited too.

In this CES the DIY or Do It Yourself - is getting more and more popular nowadays. More people are getting their hands dirty... renovating their own garages, porches, rooms, roof... almost all parts of their house. More people are doing their own house painting, landscaping, and even additions. Why not? It will save them more money on "labor". Hiring a carpenter will cost half of the budget.

Nowadays, I believe you don't need to have years of experience in carpentry to be able to build something simple because DIY is easy and readily available. All you need is some basic practical knowledge that you already learned from childhood [play], some skills from school [Math for measurement, Reading and Comprehension for following the instruction in the box, Science for mixing and stirring], a little determination to finish a project, a little inspiration or in my case "pushing and nagging" from loved ones, and a little sense of humor.

Wish I am more creative... so I can make a card for my Sweetie.

Wish I am a poet... so I can write her a poem.

Wish I can sing... so I can put rhythm on the poem and sing it to her.

Wish I can draw... so I can sketch her lovely face.

Wish I can paint... so I can express in canvas how colorful my life with her.

Wish I have the money... so I can just buy everything and make her happy.

But then... I wish she is not PMS-ing so that she will not be mad at me and give me a hard time when she found out that I didn't have the money, the time, and the creativity to get something for her on moment like this.

Carpenter's Knee or Angler's Knee

If there is such a thing as Tennis' Elbow... there should also be a Carpenter's Knee or Back or Shoulder, shouldn't it?

Geez... I am doomed! It's Valentine's Eve [and I still haven't figure out what to give Wifey or have the resources to get her one, shhhhhh]. It's also Chinese New Year's Eve [Gong Hei Fard Choy but I am not Chinese so does my Sweetie]. And it's February the 13th [good thing it didn't fall on a Friday]. It's 40 degrees. It's balmy. It's sunny. And it's just not right! My knees are sore and I can barely make my trip to the bathroom a breeze.

Wifey's Diagnosis: A symptom of Carpenter's knee disease. LOL No! It's not a new medical terminology. It's my Sweetie's personal Medical Terminology for my "chronic" pain. Well, since she enrolled on Medical Terminology class, she came up with lots of terminologies to identify different things to amuse herself.

The pain on my knees... that I can endure. I have no problem with that because I'm used to it, anyway. What I cannot endure is the fact that today is Open Ice-Fishing Derby here in Maine. A winter sport activity sponsored by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife! It's all over the News.

It means you don't need a license to join. It means it's a madness all over the frozen lakes and ponds and what-have-you in all of Maine. I can almost smell the competitive breath of true-blooded anglers vying for prizes big and small. I can almost feel the chaotic fun and adventures in-stored for all anglers and expectators alike. And food and drink are overflowing, I can already feel my calories rising and cholesterol storing up in my cartilage. Geez!

My first work resume

I am an only child so I practically grew up alone and played horsey-horsey or cowboy or a builder all by myself. I grew up building sandcastles in the beach in summer, piled up a few wooden planks up the tree branches to make tree-houses in fall, dug up some cave in the snowbank in winter, and gathered some sticks in the woods to build Indian tepees in spring. Those were just my childhood wayward adventures.

Now that I am indeed a builder I can put credit on those childhood play that some adults think are nonsense. Play gave me the opportunity to think and build a certain skill and perhaps hone a certain interest in me. But as a builder my trade is no play anymore. I take everything seriously and with passion. And I do take pride in what I do. But still I know that... childhood play is my first work experience.

Now, that I do have a little boy of my own, who I can say practically picked up same playful thing from me... except the robots and aliens and all sorts of super hero thingy that were not available during my childhood... I wonder what would he become when he grows up. As a father I want him to be like me or shall I say I should want him to be like me. But with his wild imagination, I have a feeling that he can make movie that will make millions of dollars. No kidding! Then, I will be happy and retire a rich old man. [I wish.]

I have zero knowledge on computer and everything about the internet. Well, not entirely zero because I know how to make it works. I pay my bills and do my banking online. I search for building materials and everything I need to know about my trade online. And I know how to use its accessories like the headset, printer, modem, speakers and the mouse.

But with regards to website and how to use it for monetizing purposes like to promote my business… the credit goes to my Sweetie. Yes, she is the one who did everything here and she talks about Austin Search Engine Optimization that her blogger friend from Texas uses to help her get higher page rank and things like that… well, I just say yes because I honestly don’t know what she was talking about. I am just happy that I can share something here.

The Carpenter is a Caregiver too

I'm playing Doctor today. No, I was playing Doctor since last weekends. Wifey was down with a flu so I was her caregiver. But I think she feels a lot better now. Thanks God!

She is a whiner! Shhhhhhhhhhhh! [Hope she won't take a peek of my blog and read about this.] wink* Yes, she was constantly whining because she was not feeling good. Well she does whine even if she is not sick anyway so it doesn't make a lot of difference too. LOL. But even if she is a whiner, I still love her to death!

I'm playing Doctor now because Wifey always plays Doctor to me every night when I come home from work. Working all day on the roof take a big toll on my back and climbing the ladder more than a hundred times would worn my legs down at night. So I will be whining about my sore body every time I come home. And I will ask Wifey to rub my back with that magic ointment that she brought from the Philippines and that will instantly calmed the tight muscles down. Well, she would whine a bit when I asked her to do that especially if she is busy working online but nevertheless, she will take a break and give me her loving touch.

So now that she is the one sick, it's my turn to return the favor. And I tell you, I am not so happy that she is sick. She is not grumpy or anything, it's just that I want her to the her old bubbly self even if she is constantly whining like a baby.

Working on a Weekend

It's the weekend. It's that day of the week where everybody is looking forward to. I am looking forward to it for many reasons. Ice-fishing is one. But I am not going to ice-fish today because I need to go to my friend's to help him fix his heater.

For the past couple of week I have been working on weekends instead of the regular weekdays. I have no problem with that because as I already mentioned in my previous posts, it has been awhile since I had a project. So working on weekends was a-okay.

Last year, I used to work mostly on weekends because that is the only days of the week where I can work without being interrupted and without interrupting anyone. I used to maintain a property for my former boss who was then vacationing in Florida with his wife the entire winter season. The property is a commercial establishment so obviously, the weekdays are busy and full of people. And since my maintenance work involved a lot of pounding and sawing and grinding and sanding and painting and repairing... noise, smell and dust were unacceptable. So, the weekends were the best days to work. It was then that I spent most of my weekdays as my regular working day. If you know what I mean.

I'm in love again!

Starting a new project is like... falling in love for the first time.

I don't know about other people... but for me, starting a new project gives me mixed emotions like that of a young pubescent boy looking an a hot matured lady in equally hot and skimpy outfit. It gives me an indescribable adrenalin kick at my gut that makes me jump for joy.

Okay, I know this is too over-dramatic. "Very-Wifey" if I may put a tag on this. Or maybe I was too carried away. As what we all know, you only learn to appreciate something when it's gone. That is why when I had a long extended vacation from work... I really appreciate it because I have nothing to complain about.

Well, "falling in love" may not be the right words or phrase to describe my appreciation for the project I am doing right now... but since it is the month of the "hearts"... I might as well go with the theme. LOL

of Backache and Sea Urchin

Backache! Who needs one?

One of the downsides of my trade as a carpenter is the big "P". Pain, that is.

I have been working as a carpenter for more than 15 years now. It may not be that long for a guy past his golden years but being able to still do hard manual work at this age is already a blessing in itself.

I started a little late in the construction business because I did a lot of scuba diving for sea urchins for almost 10 years prior to carpentry. I worked under-water diving for sea urchins for 8 hours a day and 7-days a week on peak seasons. And I consider that as the most exciting job I ever had... not to mention the pay. wink*

Scuba diving for me is not just a job but it's a hobby. And to be able to enjoy my hobby and make money out of it is a good thing, isn't it? But some good things never last... as the saying goes. Sea urchins became scarce and so the work hours. It was then time to find something else to do and move on.

And so I moved on and shifted to carpentry but my passion for scuba diving didn't die when I quit the job. And definitely I will be sharing more experiences and photos of my passion in the near future.
